In the 2024 Laver Cup, Team Europe claimed victory over Team World in a thrilling comeback, winning 13-11. The decisive moment came when Carlos Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5 in the final match, securing the trophy for Europe after they had started the day trailing 4-8. Alcaraz also contributed significantly throughout the event, earning a total of eight points for his team.
The action resumed with Alcaraz and Casper Ruud reducing the deficit via a 6-2 7-6 (6) doubles victory over Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, before Shelton defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (6) 7-5 10-7 to put the rest of the world 11-7 up.
Team World had led 11-7 going into the penultimate match in the first-to-13 competition.
But with three points available for each win on day three, German Alexander Zverev’s 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 10-5 win over American Frances Tiafoe reduced World’s lead to a single point and forced a deciding match.
Alcaraz subsequently overcame Fritz 6-2 7-5 in straight sets as the Europeans won the Ryder Cup-style competition for the first time since 2021.
The world No. 3 shared his joy, emphasizing the collective effort of his teammates throughout the tournament. “I mean it’s great. Obviously we came here with a goal, all of us. It is to win the Laver Cup. I’m really happy. We are really, really happy about reaching the goal, winning the Laver Cup,” Alcaraz stated.
He acknowledged how close they came to losing, but credited Alexander Zverev for stepping up and giving him the chance to secure the win. “It’s been a really tough one, I’m gonna say we almost lost but Sascha came with a really good tennis and gave me a chance to win the Laver Cup.”
Next year’s Laver Cup takes place in San Francisco with Yannick Noah (Team Europe) and Andre Agassi (Team World) captaining.
