Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz held off a spirited challenge from Botic van de Zandschulp to reach the Swiss Indoors quarter-finals. Daniil Medvedev won against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Vienna to mark his return to tennis with a simple 6-2 6-2 victory. Earlier in the day, Great Britain’s Dan Evans became the first player into the quarter-finals when he beat Karen Khachanov.

Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz eased into the quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors by beating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard clinched the win with his only ace in a second-round match where he had 20 winners and made just nine unforced errors.

Alcaraz’s serve was broken once and he trailed 2-0 in the second set before reeling off six straight games against the 35th-ranked Dutchman.

Daniil Medvedev advanced to the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on Wednesday against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Still in the race for a fourth participation in the Masters, which he has already won in 2020, Medvedev, 4th player in the world and seeded number 1 in the tournament, was expeditious: one hour was enough for him to beat the 94th player in the ATP ranking.

The former world No.1 will find Dominic Thiem in the next round.

British number two Dan Evans eased into the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open with a straight-sets victory over US Open semi-finalist Karen Khachanov in Vienna.

Unseeded Evans, ranked 26th in the world, overcame his Russian opponent 6-2 6-2 in an hour and 16 minutes.

The 32-year-old will face Denis Shapovalov in the last eight after the Canadian edged past American Taylor Fritz 6-1 4-6 6-3.
