A new week has come to an end, marked by the ATP 500 tournaments in Munich and Barcelona. Alexander Zverev celebrated his 28th birthday in style on Sunday at the BMW Open by Bitpanda, where he soared to a record-equalling third Munich title. Won by Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune in Barcelona respectively, these events led to some changes in the ATP rankings.
Thanks to his title in Munich and Carlos Alcaraz’s loss in the Barcelona final, Zverev reclaims the No. 2 spot, pushing Alcaraz back to No. 3.
With this victory Rune absolutely demolishes Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz, in straight sets 7-6, 6-2 at the Barcelona Open and breaks into the top 10 of the ATP rankings. Carlos was the favorite coming into this match, having been undefeated in Barcelona since 2021. However, Rune had other ideas. The 21-year-old Dane, once considered a future Grand Slam contender alongside Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, had not reached a final since January 2024 and had dropped out of the world’s top 15. His win in Barcelona, which included victories over Casper Ruud and Karen Khachanov, lifts him to ninth in the ATP rankings and marks his first title since Munich in 2023.
As if being crushed by the Danish youngster wasn’t enough, the major concern right now for Carlos Alcaraz’s fans, is his mid-match medical timeout. The Spanish star had a lengthy treatment in the beginning of the second set, and indicated an issue with his hip/adductor area.
