Iga Swiatek has been named the WTA Player of the Year as part of their awards week, which began on Monday and concludes on Friday.
From Dec. 12 to 16, the WTA will honor this year’s best players, tournaments, coach and those athletes who have gone above and beyond to support the Hologic WTA Tour at every level.
The first of five Players Awards, three Player Service Awards in addition to the Coach of the Year Award on Monday were the first to be announced. Later this week, the WTA will reveal the Tournaments of the Year in their respective categories, with all winners being celebrated on social media and digital platforms in the coming days.
No player could match Swiatek’s records for finals reached, trophies won and matches won in 2022.
Swiatek, a 21-year-old from Poland who was the WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2020, led the tour with 67 match wins and eight titles. That included a run of six trophies in a row during a 37-match winning streak that lasted from February to July and was the longest undefeated stretch in women’s tennis in a quarter of a century.
Among those eight titles were two Grand Slams, at Roland Garros and the US Open, WTA 1000 titles at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open (Doha), BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells), the Miami Open presented Itaú, Internazionali BNL d’Italia (Rome) and WTA 500 titles at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix (Stuttgart) and the San Diego Open.
Meanwhile, the coach of the year award, voted for by WTA registered coaches, was given to David Witt following his work with Jessica Pegula.
Pegula has risen from No. 18 to No. 3 in the WTA rankings under his guidance.
Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic were the WTA Doubles Team of the Year for the second consecutive season and third time overall after winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open.
The honour for most improved player of the year has been given to Beatriz Haddad Maia, who finished inside the top 100 rankings and became the first Brazilian to win a WTA Player Award since they were introduced in 1977.
Zheng Qinwen was named WTA newcomer of the year after she climbed almost 100 positions in the WTA Rankings this season, thanks to a consistent streak of results, and is expected to break into the Top 25 by the end of 2022.
The comeback player award will go to Tatjana Maria, with the stand-out achievement coming in her incredible run to the Wimbledon semi-finals.
