Australian De Minaur dispatches Hurkacz to reach fourth round. Alex de Minaur recorded his 50th ATP Masters 1000 win on Monday, where he earned a statement 6-4, 6-0 victory against Hubert Hurkacz to reach the fourth round in Indian Wells.
The ninth-seeded Australian was in ruthless mood against Hurkacz in a blistering 75-minute win. He converted all four of his break points and saved the one break point he faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to advance with little trouble. De Minaur now leads Hurkacz 2-1 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, with this their first meeting since 2019. De Minaur has enjoyed a good start to the season, highlighted by a first Australian Open quarter-final and a title match showing at the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam. He is 15-1 against players outside the Top 20 in 2025.
Carlos Alcaraz kept his Indian Wells “three-peat” campaign on track with a pristine 6-2 6-4 win against Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the third round, as a crowd of Americans fed off the home fans to reach the final 16.
The second-seeded Spaniard Alcaraz’s win was never in doubt as he took the first five games, sending over 10 winners in the first set alone, as Shapovalov – who was fresh off a confident win in Dallas – struggled to find his usual intensity.
The four-time major winner never faced a break in a nearly flawless second set and he held to love in the final game, clinching the victory in under 90 minutes with a mighty overhead smash.
Alcaraz will play Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov next, after the latter defeated Gael Monfils 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 7-6 (7-2).
World No. 3 Coco Gauff of the United States moved into the BNP Paribas Open Round of 16 for the third straight year with a 7-6(1), 6-2 win over No. 29 seed Maria Sakkari of Greece on Monday.
Gauff took 1 hour and 35 minutes to overcome Sakkari, who is one of the strongest Indian Wells players of recent years. Sakkari is a two-time finalist at the BNP Paribas Open, including last year, where she beat Gauff in the semifinals.
“It was a bit tricky conditions,” Gauff said in her post-match press conference.
“I think we were both struggling a little bit with finding the rhythm, and I was just trying to stay solid on my end of the court.”
Two-time finalist Daniil Medvedev advanced to the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open after Alex Michelsen was forced to retire just 10 minutes into their maiden meeting on Sunday due to illness. Medvedev took a medical timeout himself to deal with a nosebleed in the second game, but upon resumption at 0-2, Michelsen called the match.
The fifth-seeded Medvedev made an impressive start by defeating Buyunchaokete on Friday for his 200th hard-court win since 2020. The 29-year-old is now 10-5 on the season and is one victory away from a fourth consecutive ATP Tour quarter-final.
I played a very good first round, so I was looking forward to playing Alex,” said Medvedev. “I didn’t see him [play] too much, but I like the way he plays and I think it could [have been] an interesting match. It’s unfortunate for him to get food poisoning, or something like this, but it happens.
“It’s not easy to play here, always tough conditions. Before the tournament I was starting to lose my rhythm, but I got it back after the first match. I’m starting to feel better and better here.”
In the fourth round, Medvedev will face 10th seed Tommy Paul, who earlier ousted 2021 champion Cameron Norrie 6-3, 7-5 to earn his 50th ATP Masters 1000 win. The 27-year-old joined Taylor Fritz as the only active American players to reach this milestone.
By the way, five American men are through to the round of 16 at Indian Wells for the first time since 2004!
Tommy Paul and Marcos Giron advanced on Sunday, while Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Brandon Nakashima all won on Monday.
