MEN’S SINGLES:
Carlos Alcaraz wins Cincinnati Open as Jannik Sinner retires from final with illness!
Two years ago, Alcaraz lost an incredible match against Novak Djokovic in the Cincinnati final, a match that is widely considered one of the greatest three-set matches of all time. But today Carlos claimed his first Cincinnati Open title, marking his 22nd ATP Tour title overall and eighth Masters 1000 victory.
He became the youngest man to win the event since Andy Murray in 2008!
Sinner, who had looked under the weather from the start of the match, explained later that he had been struggling with illness since Sunday.
“From yesterday I didn’t feel great. I thought that I would improve during the night. It came up worse. I tried to come out and make it at least a small match but I couldn’t handle more. I’m very, very sorry for all of you. I know some of you on Monday maybe had to work or do something else, so I’m very, very sorry.”
WOMEN’S SINGLES:
In women’s singles final Iga Świątek triumphed over Jasmine Paolini with 7–5, 6–4 to win her first Cincinnati Open title.
This marks her 11th WTA 1000 title and 24th overall WTA Tour title!
She didn’t drop a single set throughout the tournament and converted all six break points in the final. Her victory also elevated her to No. 2 in the world rankings, securing the second seed for the upcoming US Open.
“I want to thank my team. I don’t know why I won tournaments that were like the last ones in terms of where I thought I would be playing well.”
“Thank you for forcing me to become a better player and learning how to play on these faster surfaces. I’m shocked and super happy.”
MEN’S DOUBLES:
Nikola Mektić & Rajeev Ram defeated Lorenzo Musetti & Lorenzo Sonego in the final, 4–6, 6–3, [10–5] to claim the title.
WOMEN’S DOUBLES:
Gabriela Dabrowski & Erin Routliffe won over Guo Hanyu & Alexandra Panova.
The pair won in straight sets, 6–4, 6–3. Routliffe successfully defended her title (this time alongside Dabrowski), marking Dabrowski’s fifth WTA 1000 doubles title.
